Police said a 23-year-old man was walking in the 3100 block of West Cermak Road at about 10:25 a.m. when two people approached him. A physical altercation followed, and the man — who police said holds a valid concealed-carry licence and a Firearm Owner's Identification (FOID) card — pulled out a gun and fired, striking one of the two people, according to police.

The injured person was taken to a nearby hospital and listed in critical condition. Police said they were speaking with a person of interest, and Area Four detectives are investigating the shooting.

Authorities have not publicly described what led to the confrontation and have not identified anyone involved, and the reports reviewed did not announce any arrest or charges. The account above is the police version of events; the investigation is ongoing.

A second report of the same police statement, published by Wisevoter, carried the same details — the time, the Cermak Road block, the shooter's valid licence and FOID card, and the victim's critical condition.
