CHICAGO, Illinois — Chicago police have charged a 58-year-old landlord, Jerry Powe, with murder after a 36-year-old woman was found dead inside a residence in the 8100 block of South Ellis Avenue in Chatham, on the city's South Side, and another woman was allegedly assaulted at the same address.

A 28-year-old tenant told a friend she was being sexually assaulted at gunpoint by her landlord, and the friend's 911 call triggered a police welfare check, according to reporting summarising the police report. Fire crews forced entry after officers found the apartment door locked and discovered an unresponsive 36-year-old woman on a couch, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Around the same time, Powe allegedly walked into the Grand Crossing police station and told officers he had killed a woman by strangulation, according to the police report.

The charges are allegations and do not establish guilt. Police have not released further details about the circumstances, and the investigation continues as the case moves through the Cook County courts, where Powe is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
