CHICAGO — One person was taken into custody after shots were fired outside the Chicago Federal Building in the Loop on Tuesday morning (October 20), officials said, in a heavy police response that closed off part of South Dearborn Street in downtown Chicago.

Officers were seen searching for bullet casings outside the Kluczynski Federal Building in the 200-block of South Dearborn Avenue. Reports of gunfire came at about 4:45 a.m., ABC7 Chicago (WLS) reported. NBC Chicago reported a large presence of Chicago Police and Department of Homeland Security officers at the scene, with police tape, evidence markers and cones around the building at 230 S. Dearborn, and CBS Chicago also reported a suspect in custody near the building.

The Department of Homeland Security said in a statement quoted by ABC7: 'On the morning of October 20, an FPS Protective Security Officer reported an active shooter on Federal property near the John C. Kluczynski Federal Building in Chicago, IL. FPS personnel and the Chicago Police Department responded. Local police took the subject into custody. There were no injuries reported, only minor damage to federal property.' DHS said the investigation is active and ongoing, so additional information will be limited until it is concluded.

Chicago police said a male suspect was taken into custody, a gun was recovered from the scene and charges are pending. ABC7 reported at least two bullet holes in the side of an office building across the street, above the sidewalk.

A spokesperson for the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois said there is no active threat and the Dirksen Federal Courthouse, part of the same federal plaza, remains open. Authorities had not released the suspect's name or a motive by the time of publication, and further details were not immediately available.
