The FBI announced on October 20, 2026, that Joseph 'Troubles' Matos has been added to its Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list, increasing the reward for information leading to his arrest to $1 million (yaani 10 lakh dollars), FBI Chicago said in its official announcement. Matos is wanted in connection with the shooting death of Illinois National Guard member Chrys Carvajal.
'Today's addition of Matos to the FBI's notorious Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list ensures that his face and description will be found on every FBI-affiliated website and social media platform, and this case will now be on every phone around the world until he is apprehended,' FBI Chicago Special Agent in Charge Ryan Whalen said. Whalen credited the Chicago Police Department, the prosecuting team under U.S. Attorney Andrew Butros, and Carvajal's family. The same announcement and reward were reported independently by ABC News wire reporting carried by MyCentralOregon and KTBB, and by the Chicago Focal.
On July 3, 2021, during an Independence Day weekend celebrating Carvajal's graduation from National Guard basic training, it is alleged that Matos and a fellow gang member shot and killed Carvajal, 19, while he was walking to his car after a party in Chicago's Belmont Cragin neighbourhood, the FBI said. A joint Chicago Police Department and FBI investigation led to a federal arrest warrant on May 14, 2024, after Matos was charged with murder in aid of racketeering and murder through the use of a firearm. Days later, FBI Chicago SWAT teams searched for Matos and his associate Gary Roberson; Roberson was taken into custody without incident, but Matos was not located and has remained a fugitive, the FBI said.
Matos is believed to be a member of the Milwaukee Kings street gang, which the FBI describes as an organisation whose members and associates have engaged in narcotics trafficking and acts of violence, including murder and assault, to acquire and preserve perceived territory on Chicago's North Side. Matos is 44, stands 6 feet 2 inches, weighs about 220 pounds, has brown hair and brown eyes, and has tattoos including 'M-Town Kings' on the right side of his neck, '1300' on the left side, 'Move in Silence' on his right hand, 'Trust No One' on his left hand and 'MOST WANTED' on his abdomen, the FBI said.
The FBI says Matos is believed to be armed and dangerous, is presumed to still be in the United States, has ties to Dallas, Texas, and California, and is believed to be hiding in the greater Chicago area. Anyone with information is asked to contact the FBI's toll-free tip line at 1-800-CALLFBI (1-800-225-5324), a local FBI office, or tips.fbi.gov; information can be submitted anonymously. Matos is the 544th fugitive added to the list. The charges against him are allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
