BLOOMINGTON, Indiana — Seven people were wounded when gunfire broke out in a large crowd on Kirkwood Avenue in downtown Bloomington at about 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, according to a news release from the Bloomington Police Department. No deaths have been reported, and police say more victims may still come forward.

The shooting happened in the 400 block of East Kirkwood Avenue, in the stretch between Grant Street to the west and Dunn Street to the east, beside People's Park and about two blocks west of the Indiana University Bloomington campus. Kirkwood is the city's main downtown entertainment street, lined with bars and restaurants and busy with students on weekend nights.

What police say happened

Several city and university police officers were already in the area between Grant and Dunn, monitoring a large crowd that had gathered on Kirkwood, when they heard several gunshots at about 1:30 a.m. and converged on the spot, the release said. Preliminary information indicates there was some kind of disturbance in the crowd just before the shooting.

Officers found several people in the downtown area with wounds believed to be from the shooting. A total of seven people were taken by ambulance to area hospitals, police said. Police have not released the ages, identities or conditions of the injured. Indiana University police and the Indiana State Police assisted Bloomington officers at the scene, Fox 59 reported.

A man chased and caught near Dunn Meadow — but police have not said he fired

A man with a gun was seen running northeast from the area of the gunshots, and officers chased him and caught him east of Indiana Avenue near Dunn Meadow, the release said. A gun was located nearby. Police said it is currently unknown whether the man was the person who fired the shots, and the police release did not name him or announce charges against him.

Investigators found several shell casings of different calibers on the sidewalk near 420 Kirkwood, the street address of a Chipotle Mexican Grill, according to the release — a detail that leaves open whether more than one gun was fired, though police have not drawn that conclusion publicly.

In an update on Sunday morning, The B Square Bulletin reported that the day's jail book-in report showed Bloomington police had arrested an 18-year-old Indianapolis man at Kirkwood Avenue and Dunn Street on charges of resisting law enforcement and unlawful carrying of a handgun, in an arrest recorded at 6:27 a.m. The outlet noted that the location, charges and incident number suggest a possible connection to the shooting — police have not publicly confirmed that the man in the book-in report is the man chased to Dunn Meadow, or that either man fired a shot.

Background: a homecoming night, and a street with a history

The shots came about six hours after the end of Indiana University's homecoming football game, which IU won in overtime, and the crowd on Kirkwood was part of the late-night homecoming gathering downtown. The Bloomingtonian reported the crowd had gathered after IU's game against Minnesota, and noted this is at least the third shooting on Kirkwood Avenue this year — context that has made the street's late-night safety a recurring local debate in a city whose life revolves around the university.

Why this matters beyond Bloomington

Indiana University Bloomington enrols students from every U.S. state and from countries around the world, including a large international student community. A shooting in the middle of homecoming night, two blocks from campus in the street students use most, is the kind of incident that reaches families far from Indiana within minutes — and it is why police are asking anyone who was on Kirkwood, including anyone who filmed the crowd, to come forward.

What happens next

The investigation is continuing and the case is still developing, police said, and it is possible there are more victims who have not yet been counted. Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting, or with video footage from Kirkwood Avenue that night, to contact Detective Chris Scott at (812) 339-4477 or by email at scottc@bloomington.in.gov. Whether the man caught near Dunn Meadow fired any shots, what charges — if any — he will face, and the conditions of the seven people in hospital are the next facts investigators are expected to establish.
