A 9-year-old boy from Monroe City died after the minivan he was riding in was struck head-on on State Road 57 in Daviess County, southern Indiana, on Sunday afternoon, October 18, 2026, the Daviess County Sheriff's Office said. WVUT-TV, the PBS station in Vincennes, and GIANT fm both reported the sheriff's office account of the crash.
Deputies say the crash happened at about 2:46 p.m. near County Road 700 South, south of the city of Washington. A northbound 2022 Chevrolet lost control, crossed the centre line and collided with a southbound 2017 Dodge minivan driven by a 62-year-old Monroe City woman. All three people in the minivan were taken to hospital. The 9-year-old passenger was flown to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, where he later died of his injuries, the sheriff's office said. Awaaz Punjab does not name children who are victims.
The driver of the Chevrolet, Jacob Sisco, 25, of Washington, Indiana, was not injured. Deputies reported that he showed signs of impairment at the scene. He was taken to Daviess Community Hospital for chemical testing and was then arrested and booked into the Daviess County Security Center on preliminary charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated resulting in death and operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury, according to the sheriff's office. The charges are allegations; Sisco is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Investigators are continuing to reconstruct the crash, and the case will be submitted to the local prosecutor's office for a decision on formal charges, the sheriff's office said.
The boy was a fourth-grade student in the South Knox school community and played youth baseball locally. WVUT-TV reported on Monday, October 20, that South Knox and North Knox youth baseball leagues left their field lights on overnight in his memory, and that a community fund has been set up to help his family with funeral expenses. The Vincennes Community School Corporation also posted condolences to the family and the South Knox school community.
