The investigation began after a fatal overdose in early 2026, according to IMPD. Detectives with the department's Overdose Death Task Force worked to identify the suspected dealer and trace the source and supply chain of the drugs entering Indianapolis, WTHR, the city's NBC affiliate, also reported.

On October 21, IMPD, the Indiana State Police and the Drug Enforcement Administration served search warrants at multiple locations across Indianapolis, with help from the Beech Grove Police Department, IMPD said. The work was conducted as part of a High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA) programme.

Authorities said they seized more than 1,500 pounds of unprocessed psilocybin mushrooms, which police valued at $2.1 million to $4.2 million (yaani about 21 lakh to 42 lakh dollars). Officers also reported recovering 25 pounds of dried cultivated mushrooms, 66 pounds of mushroom edibles, 277 pounds of liquid mushroom drinks, 6 pounds of marijuana and hundreds of pressed pills suspected to contain MDMA, according to police.

The searches also turned up two sawed-off shotguns, three AR-style pistols, two AR-style rifles, $9,500 in cash and two cars subject to forfeiture, police said.

The two men, aged 41 and 26, were arrested on preliminary charges of dealing in and possessing a controlled substance, IMPD said. The Marion County Prosecutor's Office will decide whether to file formal charges. “Every step we take is about protecting families and preventing another tragedy,” Lt. Justin Gough said in a statement. An arrest is an accusation, and the men are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
