Thirteen people were arrested early Wednesday in a multi-state warrant sweep stemming from an alleged July 4 altercation between the Iron Horsemen and Hells Angels motorcycle groups in Madison, Indiana, Indiana State Police said. Police called the operation “Operation Rusty Cherub”; arrests were made in Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky and Virginia.

The investigation began on July 4 shortly after 3 p.m., when members of the two groups allegedly fought inside Shipley's Tavern on West Street in Madison. Police said the fight left multiple people injured and caused property damage inside the bar. It happened while thousands were in town for the Madison Regatta weekend. Madison police first responded, but Indiana State Police took over because of the scope of the case, and charges were filed in Jefferson County Superior Court.

Eleven suspects were arrested in the tri-state area on Wednesday morning and two more were arrested in Richmond, Virginia, by the U.S. Marshals Service, police said. Search warrants were served at 18 locations. Those arrested face charges that include alleged corrupt business influence, battery with a deadly weapon, battery resulting in moderate bodily injury and disorderly conduct, according to the police account reported by WDRB/WAVE and 812 Now.
“In one of our community's busiest and most exciting weekends of the year, individuals from these two organizations chose to engage in criminal activity and cause chaos among law-abiding citizens who wanted to enjoy what Madison has to offer,” Jefferson County Prosecutor David Sutter said in a news release. Indiana State Police said the three-month investigation used multiple techniques, including Flock cameras, to identify and locate suspects, and that the arrests led to additional search warrants and possible additional local charges. All charges are allegations; the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
