Investigators allege that Jeffrey Allen Mauck, 53, of Borden, approached the girl while she was outside her residence, grabbed her, threatened her with a firearm and tried to force her into his vehicle. The girl told police she screamed for help and struggled to break free, which brought family members outside; they detained Mauck until deputies arrived. These are allegations, and Mauck is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Officers recovered a revolver, ammunition, handcuffs and two folding knives during the investigation, the sheriff's department said. Mauck was taken to Ascension St. Vincent Salem Hospital for medical clearance and then booked into the Washington County Detention Center.
The preliminary charges announced by the sheriff's department are attempted kidnapping, criminal confinement and aggravated battery, each listed as a Level 3 felony, and pointing a firearm, a Level 6 felony; WDRB/WAVE also reported a charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. The case goes to the Washington County Prosecutor's Office for a decision on formal charges.
"This is an extremely disturbing incident, and we are thankful this young girl was able to get away and that her family acted quickly," Sheriff Brent Miller said in the release. "Anyone who attempts to harm or abduct a child in Washington County will be met with the full force of law enforcement." In line with our minor-safety rule, Awaaz Punjab is not naming or identifying the girl.
