Crews will close eastbound Interstate 80 from the Northeast Mixmaster to U.S. 65 (Exit 142) in Altoona, Iowa, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. tonight, Wednesday, October 21, and again on Thursday night, weather permitting, the Iowa Department of Transportation's Grimes construction office said in an October 21 release carried by EIN Presswire. Crews will pave the eastbound lanes of I-80 during the closures, and the department said the closures may delay drivers.

Eastbound I-80 on the same stretch will also close from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night from Sunday night, October 25, until Friday morning, October 30, the department said. Drivers should follow the marked detour route, which uses southbound Interstate 235, Euclid Avenue, Hubbell Avenue and U.S. 65 to reach eastbound I-80 — a route truck drivers crossing Iowa on the I-80 corridor will need on each of those nights.

In a second October 21 announcement, the Iowa DOT said crews will close the ramp from westbound I-80 to westbound I-235 from 8 p.m. Friday, October 23, until 5 a.m. Monday, October 26, weather permitting, so work on the westbound I-235 bridge over Northeast Broadway Avenue can be completed. Westbound I-235 will be down to one lane during the project, and the signed detour sends drivers west on I-80 to U.S. 69/Northeast 14th Street at Exit 136, then back east on I-80/I-35 to reach westbound I-235 at Exit 137A.

The department reminded motorists to drive with caution in work areas, obey posted speed limits and signs, and stay alert and buckled up, noting that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. Current Iowa traveller information is available through the state's 511 system at 511ia.org, by calling 511 in Iowa or 800-288-1047 nationwide, and through the free 511 app, the department said.

What is solid

  • The closure times, the stretch of eastbound I-80 affected (Northeast Mixmaster to U.S. 65, Exit 142, at Altoona), the paving purpose and the signed detour are stated in the Iowa DOT's own October 21 release, carried verbatim by EIN Presswire.
  • The weekend ramp closure (westbound I-80 to westbound I-235, Oct. 23–26), its bridge-work purpose and its detour are stated in a second Iowa DOT release on iowadot.gov.
  • Both releases say the work is weather permitting, so the schedule can change with conditions.

What is only claimed

  • Whether every listed night will in fact close on schedule is not established — the department conditioned the closures on the weather, and drivers are directed to the live 511 system for the current status.
