A Kansas man has been arrested and charged over alleged online threats to shoot President Donald Trump ahead of the president's campaign visit to Wichita, federal prosecutors announced.

Jaden J. Read, 24, of Clearwater, was charged on Saturday, October 17, 2026, with making threats against the president, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Kansas, and was arrested the same day — two days before Trump's scheduled Monday visit to Wichita.

Prosecutors said the investigation began on October 15, when a Crime Stoppers tip alerted authorities to comments posted beneath a KAKE News Facebook article about the president's trip, the Epoch Times reported from the federal release. According to the release, Read allegedly posted comments referring to shooting the president and to ammunition, and in comments under a KWCH 12 News article about the visit he allegedly wrote that he knew where Trump's speech would take place and had 'already mapped out roofs around' the venue.

'Political violence and threats of political violence will not be tolerated,' U.S. Attorney Ryan A. Kriegshauser said in the statement. 'The First Amendment allows for robust disagreement but there are constraints. I caution people to stay within the bounds of constitutionally protected speech.'

Trump went ahead with the Kansas appearance on Monday, October 19, speaking in the Wichita area in support of Republican candidates. It was not clear from the reports whether Read has been appointed an attorney. The federal charge is an allegation only; Read is presumed innocent unless and until he is proven guilty in court.
