Wichita police on Tuesday, October 20, urged the public to be patient - and pushed back against false claims spreading online - as investigators continue to examine a crash that turned a youth soccer afternoon into a tragedy.

On Saturday, October 17, at about 3:25 p.m., a Chevrolet pickup that had been parked near the fields at the Stryker Sports Complex in northeast Wichita drove onto a soccer field during a game, the Associated Press reported, citing police. Two people from McPherson were killed: a 6-year-old child and Nicholas Schafer, 35, who were not related. Ten others, ranging in age from 5 to 68, were taken to area hospitals with injuries described as non-serious. In line with Awaaz Punjab's minor-safety rule, the child killed is identified here only by age and home city.

The driver, a 34-year-old woman from Garden City, was released on Sunday without charges, police said. Kansas Public Radio reported the department's Tuesday statement: based on the information available Sunday morning, and after consultation with the Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office, investigators did not have probable cause to arrest the driver. Her release does not represent a final determination about whether criminal charges are appropriate, police said. Investigators are awaiting toxicology results and a mechanical examination of the pickup, and have interviewed nearly 50 witnesses and others involved.

Police said the woman had one child playing soccer on another field at the complex, and two of her other children were with her in the pickup when it struck people on the field.

In the Tuesday statement, Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan acknowledged the case has captured attention across the country. Police also addressed what they called false claims: the department said reports that the driver is in the country illegally are false, that she has no documented criminal history, and that neither she nor her husband has ever been associated with a Wichita-area law enforcement agency. No specific timeline has been given for a charging decision, the district attorney's office said, as prosecutors await completion of the investigation.
