Thomas Brady, 55, of Norwood, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Julia E. Kobick to 20 months in prison, two years of supervised release and a $5,000 fine, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Massachusetts announced. Brady, a former Assistant Superintendent at the Norfolk County Sheriff's Office (NCSO), pleaded guilty in June 2026 to one count of witness tampering and one count of use of interstate facilities to commit bribery and extortion, according to the Justice Department release.
Prosecutors said that in October and November 2022, while serving as Assistant Deputy Superintendent for Jail Operations, Brady ordered a subordinate maintenance officer to repair his home heating system during and after work hours. The officer complied because he feared Brady would use his authority to harm his shift, position or employment, the Justice Department said. On two occasions in early November 2022, two maintenance officers installed a new circulator pump at Brady's residence.
After another officer reported Brady to the Massachusetts State Ethics Commission in June 2023, Brady mailed a letter to the commission falsely signed in that officer's name, divulging information about a confidential internal investigation, prosecutors said. Federal investigators matched Brady's fingerprint under the postage stamp and his DNA on the envelope, according to the release. At sentencing, the court also found that Brady had engaged in a smear campaign against victims and witnesses in the investigation.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lucy Sun of the Public Corruption and Special Prosecutions Unit and was announced by U.S. Attorney Leah B. Foley and FBI Boston Special Agent in Charge Ted E. Docks. Plimoth Today's report on the sentencing, published October 27, confirmed the same 20-month term, supervised release and fine, and noted the case first drew public attention after NBC10 Boston's investigative team reported that sheriff's office employees had been directed to do personal work for Brady while on duty.
