A child was killed and five other people were injured late on Halloween night when a silver Chevrolet Impala rear-ended another vehicle on the westbound Davison Freeway (M-8) near Interstate 75 in Detroit, setting off a three-vehicle crash, Michigan State Police said. State troopers responded at about 11:45 p.m. on Saturday, October 31, and the driver of the Impala was arrested on suspicion of operating while intoxicated causing death, according to police.

Investigators say the sequence began when the Impala struck the vehicle ahead of it from behind. The impact caused that second vehicle's driver to lose control, and that vehicle then struck a third vehicle, troopers said. All three vehicles were travelling in the westbound lanes of M-8, the Davison Freeway, near the I-75 interchange on Detroit's north side when the crash happened shortly before midnight.

The child, and the five injured
Six people were riding in the Impala. In the crash, a child in the car was ejected, state police said. The child was taken to a local hospital and was pronounced dead there. The other five occupants of the Impala were also injured — their injuries range from minor to critical — and all six people from the car were taken to local hospitals for treatment, according to Michigan State Police reporting carried by WDIV and FOX 2 Detroit. Police have not released the name or age of the child who died, or the names of the injured, and no conditions beyond the minor-to-critical range had been published by Sunday night.

Driver arrested on suspicion of intoxicated driving causing death
The driver of the Impala — whose name and age police have also not released — was arrested on suspicion of operating while intoxicated (OWI) causing death, state police said. The driver is also being treated at a hospital for injuries from the crash. An arrest on suspicion is an allegation, not a conviction: formal charges, if any, are decided by prosecutors after they review the investigation, and the driver has not been convicted of anything in this crash.

In Michigan, operating a vehicle while intoxicated and causing a death is a felony under state law, punishable on conviction by up to 15 years in prison. Police arrest on suspicion; the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office decides whether to issue formal charges once the state police investigation is complete. Nothing in this case has been decided in court.
Where it happened: the Davison Freeway at I-75
The Davison Freeway, signed as M-8, is the short east–west freeway that cuts across Detroit's north side, linking I-75 with the Lodge Freeway (M-10) and the city's west side. Dating to the 1940s, it is one of the oldest urban freeways in the United States, and the stretch near the I-75 interchange carries commuter, commercial and cross-town traffic around the clock — including, on a Saturday night, Halloween traffic heading home from parties across the city. None of the reporting published by Sunday night mentioned a prolonged freeway closure, and the record does not state how long the westbound lanes were affected.

One of three fatal and serious crashes on Detroit freeways overnight
The Davison crash was not the only deadly incident on metro Detroit's freeways that night. In a separate crash a few hours later, at about 2 a.m. on Sunday, three women from Detroit were killed when their vehicle left the southbound Lodge Freeway (M-10) near Wyoming Avenue and struck a barrier area after failing to negotiate a curve, state police said — a crash Awaaz Punjab has reported separately. WXYZ Channel 7 counted three separate crashes on metro Detroit freeways overnight in which a child died and multiple other people were hurt. The two fatal crashes are separate events, investigated separately, with no reported connection between them.

Why Halloween night is among the most dangerous on U.S. roads
Halloween combines almost every road-risk factor at once: darkness falls early, large numbers of children and families are on foot in residential streets, parties run late, and alcohol-impaired driving spikes on weekend nights. None of that, by itself, establishes what happened on the Davison Freeway — the state police investigation will decide the facts of this crash — but it is the backdrop against which troopers were working three serious freeway crashes in a single night, and it is why police across Michigan urge anyone who has been drinking at a Halloween gathering to use a sober driver, a taxi or a rideshare rather than a freeway drive home.

What happens next
Michigan State Police say the crash remains under investigation. Troopers will complete a crash reconstruction — examining vehicle damage, the roadway and statements — before the file goes to prosecutors, who will decide on formal charges against the arrested driver, who remains a suspect and not a convicted person. The child's identity is expected to be released only after family notification, and hospitals may update the conditions of the five injured occupants, at least one of whom was reported in critical condition. Awaaz Punjab will update this story when the state police or the prosecutor's office releases names, charges or new findings.
