A Louisiana man has been identified and formally charged in connection with the shooting and standoff that shut a stretch of US-31 in Ottawa County last week, the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office says — the development that moves the Holland Township campground case from an unnamed standoff on Wednesday to a named defendant facing four charges. Lance Wade Wilson, 45, of DeRidder, Louisiana, was arraigned after deputies say he fired shots through a camper door at a contractor and then barricaded himself for almost three hours before surrendering. The charges are allegations; Wilson is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

The new development: a name, four charges and a $25,000 bond
Wilson was arraigned on four charges, according to the sheriff's office reporting carried by WGHN on Sunday, November 1: discharging a firearm in a building; felonious assault; possession of a firearm while under the influence of alcohol; and reckless use of a firearm. His bond was set at $25,000 cash or surety, and he remains in the Ottawa County Jail. Deputies say Wilson was temporarily staying at Drew's Country Campground on Ransom Street in Holland Township, in a camper, at the time of the incident — he is not a Michigan resident, but a Louisiana man living at the campground when the shots were fired.

What happened on Wednesday afternoon
Deputies were called to the campground, in the 12000 block of Ransom Street — the sheriff's initial release gave the address as 12850 Ransom Street — at about 3:20 p.m. on Wednesday, October 28, after reports of multiple shots fired from inside a camper. The victim was a contractor performing maintenance work at the campground; a 911 caller reported being shot at approximately four times, WGHN reported. Another person was in the immediate area when the shots were fired but was not struck, and authorities confirmed no injuries were reported during the incident.

What followed turned a campground call into a county-scale emergency response. Deputies and crisis negotiators tried to contact the man inside the camper while the sheriff's Critical Response Team took over the tactical side of the operation. The Kent County Sheriff's Office and the Holland Department of Public Safety provided additional equipment and support at the scene. Because the standoff sat close to a major highway, US-31 was closed in both directions between New Holland Street and Quincy Street, cutting one of the main north-south routes along this part of Michigan's Lake Michigan shoreline for the duration of the incident.

At approximately 6:05 p.m. — almost three hours after the first call — Wilson voluntarily surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident, the sheriff's office said. He was lodged at the Ottawa County Jail, with his identity withheld at the time pending formal charges and arraignment. US-31 reopened after the standoff ended. The identification and charge list published this weekend are the step the sheriff's office said on Wednesday would come after arraignment, which is why the name is only being reported now.

1) Discharging a firearm in a building. 2) Felonious assault. 3) Possession of a firearm while under the influence of alcohol. 4) Reckless use of a firearm. Bond: $25,000 cash or surety. Wilson remains in the Ottawa County Jail. These are charges, not convictions.
Background: a campground, a contractor, and a highway closure
Drew's Country Campground sits on Ransom Street in Holland Township, a community in Ottawa County on Michigan's west side, between the city of Holland and the Lake Michigan shore. Campgrounds like it mix seasonal residents, travelling workers staying in campers for weeks at a time — as Wilson was — and short-stay visitors, which is why a single camper can become the centre of a multi-agency response: thin camper walls offer no protection from gunfire, and neighbours are only feet away. The sheriff's office has said the contractor was at the campground to do maintenance work when he was shot at; the reports published so far do not describe any prior relationship between the contractor and Wilson, and investigators have not announced a motive.

The US-31 closure is the part of this case that reached furthest beyond the campground. US-31 is the principal highway up Michigan's western shoreline, carrying local traffic, tourists and freight between Holland, Grand Haven and Muskegon. Closing it in both directions between New Holland Street and Quincy Street for roughly the length of the standoff forced that traffic onto local roads on a weekday afternoon, and it is the clearest measure of how seriously deputies treated the risk while a man with a firearm was barricaded within range of a public highway.

What happens next
The incident remains under investigation, the sheriff's office says, and Wilson's case now moves through Ottawa County's courts from arraignment toward preliminary hearings, where prosecutors will have to present evidence on each of the four counts. Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office or Silent Observer at 877-88-SILENT (74538), or via mosotips.com. Further court dates had not been published in the reports available at publication time and will be updated as the court releases them.
