SOUTHFIELD, Michigan — Breylon Roberts, 21, of Southfield pleaded not guilty on Friday, October 23, to one count of first-degree premeditated murder and one count of felony firearm in the death of his older brother, Trey Cameron Roberts, 23, according to reporting by CBS Detroit summarized by HypeFresh and by CBS Detroit's own broadcast report. He is being held without bond, and his next court appearance is scheduled for 9 a.m. on November 5 before Judge Cynthia Arvant in 46th District Court. The charges are allegations, Roberts has pleaded not guilty, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

According to Southfield police, as reported in that coverage, the shooting occurred at about 12:46 p.m. on Monday, October 19, inside the home the brothers shared in the 17000 block of Dorset Avenue. A neighbour's Ring doorbell captured the sound of 17 gunshots, police said, and surveillance video then showed Breylon Roberts leaving the rear of the residence about a minute later with a dog and walking east along the sidewalk. Police said he returned briefly, entered the back seat of his black Jeep Grand Cherokee, and later drove to a relative's home, where he took a shower.

At about 3 p.m., the brothers' younger sister came home, found blood and what appeared to be bullet evidence throughout the residence, and called 911, police said. Southfield officers arrived at about 3:02 p.m. and found Trey Roberts lying face down in the kitchen with multiple gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene. When Breylon Roberts returned to the home, the sister could be heard yelling, “What did you do? What did you do?” according to Southfield Police Chief Elvin Barren, as quoted in the coverage.

Police attribute the killing to years of jealousy over the victim's success, according to the CBS Detroit reporting — that motive is a police allegation, not a court finding, and no motive has been proven. CBS Detroit's broadcast report on the case, titled “Southfield man accused of killing brother out of jealousy, police say,” likewise described the not-guilty plea and said criminal proceedings are moving forward. The case returns to court on November 5.
