A married couple from Arlington, Texas, have been charged in the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old girl who was driving on Interstate 170 in Overland, Missouri, on her way to a Halloween event at the St. Louis Zoo, authorities announced at a news conference in Clayton on Monday, October 19, 2026. In line with Awaaz Punjab's minor-safety rule, the victim is not named — she was 17, from the St. Louis area, and 60 days short of her 18th birthday, her father told the news conference, calling the shooting a senseless act.

St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Melissa Price Smith said Willie Herndon, 42, is charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action, and his wife Taiya Herndon, 45, is charged with hindering prosecution — prosecutors allege she drove her husband to a hotel in Caseyville, Illinois, about 12 miles from St. Louis. Bail was set at $1 million cash-only for Willie Herndon and $500,000 cash-only for Taiya Herndon. (Yaani: $1 million is 10 lakh dollars.) The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that Willie Herndon is also a suspect in a second shooting days earlier in St. Louis, in which a car was hit by a single shot on Bates Street as it exited Interstate 55, according to federal court documents. It was not clear whether either defendant has a lawyer.

According to Jack Abell, chief deputy commander of the region's Major Case Squad, the shooting happened at about 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 14. Security video showed a white SUV stopped on the shoulder of southbound I-170 with its hazard lights on; a person got out, a single gunshot was heard as the girl's car passed, and the SUV drove away. The shot struck her car and she was found with a gunshot wound and later pronounced dead at a St. Louis hospital. Investigators say the couple had no connection to the girl, and Abell said a motive could not be discussed because possibly connected cases are still under investigation.

Investigators used the security video and automated license-plate readers to track the SUV, which had an out-of-state registration, to the Caseyville hotel, where the couple were taken into custody on Friday. A judge-approved search in Illinois turned up a gun and other evidence, and investigators were analysing a shell casing found beside the freeway in Overland. FBI St. Louis Assistant Special Agent in Charge Dave Herr said the case was solved within 36 hours through the work of about 20 Major Crimes Unit investigators, the FBI, the ATF and regional police departments. The charges are allegations and both defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. For Punjabi truckers and families who drive US interstates every day — I-170, I-55 and I-70 cross in the St. Louis area — the case is a stark reminder of how a routine evening drive can turn fatal, and the investigation into the possibly connected second shooting is continuing.
