Diesel edged higher across the United States in the last week while gasoline eased in most states, according to GasBuddy's weekly update released on October 26. The national average price of diesel rose 4.0 cents to $6.34 a gallon — yaani about $1.67 a litre — while the national average for gasoline was unchanged at $4.24 a gallon.

GasBuddy said its averages are compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country. The gasoline average is down 22.3 cents a gallon from a month ago but stands $1.24 a gallon higher than a year ago.

“Average gasoline prices fell in a majority of states over the last week, though a fresh spike in the Great Lakes driven by a regional refinery issue nearly offset the broader decline, with that situation now beginning to clear up,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, in the update carried by WJON News.

“Diesel edged modestly higher nationally, and with the national average for gasoline likely to remain above $4 per gallon and diesel above $6 heading into the U.S. election, the relief motorists and policymakers have been hoping for remains elusive — even as states have moved to cut fuel taxes and the Trump administration has pulled virtually every lever available,” De Haan said.

De Haan added that oil eased somewhat in Sunday trading, with West Texas Intermediate hovering just above $102 a barrel and Brent near $115, as markets weighed continued Strait of Hormuz uncertainty against the oil cartel OPEC's latest demand revisions.

For Punjabi and other truckers who form a large share of America's long-haul drivers, diesel holding above $6 a gallon keeps operating costs elevated on major freight corridors, even as gasoline relief reaches ordinary motorists in most states.
