On Friday morning, law enforcement received a 911 call about a shooting at a residence in rural Polk County, near Duncan. Responding officers found a man dead at the home. Authorities quickly identified a suspect and began searching the area for his vehicle, the State Patrol said in a news release.
Shortly after the homicide, the Butler County Sheriff found the suspect's vehicle with no one inside. The sheriff then heard gunfire from an unknown direction and retreated to a position of safety. The suspect got back into the vehicle and fled, and troopers joined the pursuit in northern Butler County.
The vehicle pulled into a residential driveway northeast of David City, where the suspect again fired shots, the State Patrol said. Two troopers returned fire. The suspect was struck and pronounced dead at the scene. A rifle was recovered, and no law-enforcement officers were injured.
The names of the homicide victim and the suspect will be released after families are notified, the State Patrol said. Its Criminal Investigations Division is investigating the homicide near Duncan.

At the county attorney's request, the State Patrol's Special Investigations Unit and the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office are investigating the trooper-involved shooting. Under State Patrol policy, the two troopers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave, and under Nebraska state law a grand jury must review any death during a law-enforcement encounter.
