Gray Television's syndicated report, sourced to the Storey County Sheriff's Office, said the landing blocked traffic for hours on Thursday as crews worked to clear the scene. Authorities initially gave no estimated time for reopening the westbound lanes.

Alternate route for drivers

Motorists were advised to avoid the area and to use southbound USA Parkway as an alternate route, the sheriff's office said. I-80 is a major east-west trucking corridor across northern Nevada, so a full westbound closure affects freight as well as local traffic.

The cause of the landing was not announced in the initial reports. The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration were reported to be responding, and the investigation is expected to establish why the pilot put the aircraft down on the interstate.
