A Nevada State Police trooper shot and wounded a driver who, according to state police, crashed into the trooper's patrol car near Boulder Highway and Sandhill Road in east Las Vegas shortly after 4 p.m. on Friday, October 30, then sped off and crashed into a pole near Sahara Avenue and Boulder Highway. The driver was taken to a hospital with gunshot wounds whose seriousness police have not described; the trooper was not seriously injured, went to a hospital as a precaution and has been placed on paid leave while the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's Force Investigation Team investigates. State police stressed that the information released so far is preliminary.

The sequence, as state police describe it so far
In an update issued after midnight, in the early hours of Saturday, October 31, Nevada State Police gave the fullest account yet: a trooper fired at a driver who crashed into the trooper's patrol car near Boulder Highway and Sandhill Road shortly after 4 p.m.; the driver then sped off and crashed into a pole near Sahara Avenue and Boulder Highway, and was taken to a hospital with gunshot wounds. Police did not say how serious the wounds are. The trooper was not seriously injured but went to a hospital as a precaution, and has been placed on paid leave — the routine step for an officer involved in a shooting while the incident is investigated.

Who is investigating — and what has not been released
The investigation is being handled by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's Force Investigation Team, the unit that examines officer-involved shootings in the valley, rather than by the State Police troopers involved. As of the overnight update, officials had not released the driver's name, age or condition, had not said what led to the first collision with the patrol car near Sandhill Road, and had not announced any charges. Nevada State Police called the information preliminary, which means the account above is the police version at its earliest stage and can change as the Force Investigation Team's work proceeds.

Everything known publicly about Friday's shooting so far comes from police statements relayed by Las Vegas television stations and the Review-Journal; the driver has not been heard from in the reporting, no independent video has been published in the accounts reviewed, and no charging decision has been announced. The details that will decide what this case becomes — the driver's condition, whether body or dash camera footage exists, and what investigators say happened in the seconds before the patrol car was struck — are exactly the details officials have not yet released. Awaaz Punjab is reporting the police account as a police account, attributed at every step, and will update the story when the Force Investigation Team or the driver's side puts more on the record.
A flooded, closed-down Friday evening in the east valley
The shooting landed on an already difficult evening for east Las Vegas drivers: storms had flooded roads across the valley on Friday, and with Sahara Avenue closed at Boulder Highway in all directions, drivers were advised to use Charleston Boulevard or Desert Inn Road for east–west trips — with a warning about leftover flooding on Desert Inn east of Paradise — or to use I-515/U.S. 95 to get around the area, with slow traffic expected on Lamb Boulevard and Nellis Boulevard as drivers detoured. A separate traffic alert also showed the ramp from southbound I-11 to Boulder Highway closed from about 5:04 p.m. Anyone with information about the shooting can contact Crime Stoppers at 702-385-5555.

Background: Boulder Highway, one of the valley's most watched roads
Boulder Highway — the older highway running southeast from Las Vegas toward Henderson and Boulder City, carrying State Routes 582 and 93 Business along stretches — is one of the Las Vegas Valley's best-known arterial roads, a wide, fast corridor of motels, casinos and shopping centres that local safety campaigns have flagged for years over pedestrian deaths, and a route many valley truckers and delivery drivers use to reach Henderson warehouses without the I-515 freeway. A full closure of its junction with Sahara Avenue, one of the valley's main east–west arterials, is therefore a major disruption even before the reason for it — a trooper opening fire — is taken into account.
What happens next
Three things now follow the standard path for a Nevada officer-involved shooting: the Force Investigation Team's investigation, which will establish the sequence from physical evidence and any camera footage; the driver's medical outcome and any criminal charges that follow from the collision with the patrol car and the flight from the scene, neither of which had been announced as of early Saturday; and the trooper's status, which remains paid leave until the investigation and any review are complete. The driver's identity and condition are the first facts expected to be added to the record.
