Jordan J. Vilcatoma-Correjo, of Edison Township, was sentenced on Thursday, October 15, 2026, before Monmouth County Superior Court Judge Jill G. O'Malley. The life sentence was imposed for first-degree murder, and the additional 10-year term for second-degree disturbing human remains will run consecutively, prosecutors said.
The victim was Sonia Gonzales, 26, also of Edison. She was found dead on the morning of June 10, 2022, in Atlantic Highlands, after police were called to the area of Asbury Avenue between Navesink and Grand avenues, according to earlier reporting on the conviction.

Jury convicted in June; judge called killing prolonged and deliberate
A Monmouth County jury found Vilcatoma-Correjo guilty of murder and disturbing human remains on June 5, after a trial that began in the last week of May. Prosecutors Caitlin Sidley and Danielle Zanzuccki told the court that after Gonzales broke up with him, she changed her phone number and daily routine to avoid contact, while he became increasingly obsessive, aggressive and threatening, according to prosecutors.
At sentencing, Judge O'Malley described the killing as a prolonged, sustained and deliberate attack, according to a sentencing summary published on October 16. Vilcatoma-Correjo maintained at sentencing that the death was unintentional; the judge rejected that account, saying the facts at trial established a deeply violent and deliberate killing.

Edison, in Middlesex County, is one of New Jersey's largest South Asian communities. The sentence closes the court case over a killing that prosecutors say followed a pattern of stalking and threats after the victim tried to end the relationship and escape contact.
