A minor crash on one of northern New Jersey's busiest highways turned fatal on Monday afternoon, October 19, 2026, when a Bronx woman was struck and killed on Route 17 in Paramus, Bergen County, according to the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office. Prosecutors said Estuardo G. Rodriguez, 31, and Krisiann Reyes Rivera, 31, were involved in a minor collision at about 5 p.m. Rivera got out of her car and approached Rodriguez's 2024 Acura, which was towing a U-Haul trailer, and struck one of its windows before walking back toward her own vehicle, authorities said.

As Rivera walked back, investigators said Rodriguez allegedly accelerated, struck her with his vehicle, and the trailer's rear tyres ran over her. Witnesses who saw what happened chased Rodriguez as he allegedly tried to flee, blocked his vehicle in traffic about half a mile from the scene, and alerted local officers, who took him into custody, police said. Rivera, who lived in the Bronx, was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, authorities said. CBS News New York later spoke with her family and friends as they tried to make sense of the loss.

Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced that Rodriguez, of Tarrytown, New York, was charged in connection with death by auto and lodged in the Bergen County Jail. Prosecutors said investigators determined he had allegedly been drinking while driving and was operating the vehicle on a suspended licence. An attorney for Rodriguez was not immediately identified, and he is expected to appear in Bergen County Superior Court. The charges are allegations, and the case remains before the courts.
