Federal agents searched businesses across New York City on Tuesday, October 20, as part of an ongoing investigation into suspected fraud in social adult day care programs, with law-enforcement activity reported in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island.
"FBI New York, along with multiple other law enforcement agencies, are conducting law enforcement activity in the area of Queens, Staten Island, Brooklyn, and other locations around New York City in connection with ongoing federal investigations," an FBI spokesperson told The Epoch Times. According to law-enforcement sources cited by IndoNewYork, the inter-agency effort also included Homeland Security Investigations, the Internal Revenue Service, the NYPD and the New York State Office of the Medicaid Inspector General.
In Borough Park, Brooklyn, investigators were seen at the Happy Adult Day Care Center on Fort Hamilton Parkway, where agents were observed removing six boxes of materials, two computers and a large plastic container at about 1:30 p.m. Separately, Fox News Digital reported that Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz personally delivered warning letters to two Queens centres — Kent Senior Care and Evergreen Adult Day Care in Flushing — as CMS officials made more than 80 visits to providers across the city, questioning billing records that appeared to show seniors attending five days a week and charges for specialised wheelchair transport.
Governor Kathy Hochul, who said the investigation had been underway for months, called it a "massive effort to combat fraud and abuse." "We are targeting providers who we believe engaged in illegal activity, ranging from money laundering to kickbacks to improper billing and other fraudulent activities," she said. Hochul said her administration has referred more than 100 cases to the state attorney general and that New York has saved more than $15 billion in Medicaid money since 2021 — figures provided by the governor's office. Officials have not disclosed the full list of businesses searched or whether anyone has been charged, and the allegations remain under investigation.
