U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said on Monday that it has removed Kanand Ojha, 45, a Guyanese national who was arrested in Long Island City, Queens, and was wanted in Guyana in connection with a 2015 murder in Georgetown, the Guyanese capital.

According to ICE, Ojha entered the United States legally through John F. Kennedy International Airport, but his lawful status was later revoked after officials learned that Guyanese police had issued a warrant for his arrest. He was located in Long Island City on September 8 and taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service's New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force, a team that includes ICE and Homeland Security Investigations personnel. ICE said Ojha was removed from the United States on September 18, 2026.

Guyanese reporting says Ojha arrived at the Eugene F. Correia International Airport at Ogle on September 18, where local law-enforcement officers received him, and that he was placed before a court three days later to answer the murder allegation and was remanded — 11 years after the killing. ICE says an alleged accomplice in the case was convicted of manslaughter in 2017 and received a 20-year prison sentence.

"New Yorkers are safer today because this accused murderer is no longer free to roam our neighborhoods," said Kenneth Genalo, director of ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations for the New York City field office, in the agency's release. The murder charge against Ojha is an allegation: he has not been convicted in the Guyana case and will face court proceedings there.
