WHITE PLAINS, New York — A New York State Thruway Authority maintenance worker, Jamil Wilson, has died from injuries suffered in a multi-car crash on the Cross Westchester Expressway, Governor Kathy Hochul said in an official statement on Tuesday, October 20.

"The death of New York State Thruway Authority Maintenance Worker Jamil Wilson on Monday from injuries resulting from a multi-car crash is a tragic loss of a committed, dedicated public servant," Hochul said. "Jamil was performing maintenance activities near exit 6 on the Cross Westchester Expressway when the crash occurred." The governor extended condolences to Wilson's family, friends and Thruway Authority colleagues.

Local reporting on the crash said it happened on Monday afternoon on the westbound side of the Thruway in White Plains, near Exit 6, where a black SUV was found overturned and the right and centre lanes and the Exit 6 entrance ramp were closed for several hours. All lanes and ramps have since reopened, according to that reporting. Authorities had not publicly disclosed the full circumstances that led to the collision.

Hochul framed the death as a reminder of the risk faced by road crews working beside high-speed traffic: "No employee should come to work and not return home safely," she said, adding that the safety of highway maintenance employees is the responsibility of every driver.

The investigation into the crash remains ongoing in the reports cited here. No further details about other drivers or any charges had been released by authorities at the time of reporting. Awaaz Punjab is reporting Wilson's name and role only as given in the governor's official statement.
