Cary police said officers went to the home of Jonathan D. Miller, 46, on Glen Echo Lane at about 8:26 a.m. for a welfare check after concerning posts appeared on his social media account. Police Chief Terry Sult told reporters Miller had a firearm, was ordered not to touch it, and ran into nearby woods.
The search centred on wooded ground near the Lochmere neighbourhood, and nearby Resurrection Lutheran School went into a code yellow lockdown for part of the day, according to the reporting. Miller was taken into custody at about 3 p.m. Police said no shots were fired and no one was injured.
Police said Miller faces charges of communicating threats, resisting officers and going armed to the terror of the people. These are allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. WRAL reported he was held at the Wake County Detention Center and was scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.
Miller is the Libertarian nominee in Senate District 16, covering much of Cary and parts of western Wake County, in the November 3 election, where he is running against Democratic incumbent Gale Adcock and Republican nominee Philip Hensley, according to WRAL.
