CARY, North Carolina — A candidate for the North Carolina state Senate was taken into custody on Monday afternoon after an hours-long standoff with police in this Raleigh suburb, Cary police said. No shots were fired and no one was injured.
Jonathan D. Miller, the Libertarian candidate for the state's 16th Senate District, which covers western Wake County, had posted messages on social media on Sunday night expressing suicidal thoughts, according to WRAL. Cary police went to his home on Monday morning for a welfare check; officers said the standoff began at about 8:26 a.m. at his home off Kildaire Farm Road.

Police said Miller, who was armed, did not follow an officer's instruction and fled into a nearby wooded area. While officers searched for him, he posted updates about the pursuit on social media and spoke by phone with WRAL several times about his state of mind. Students at a nearby school, Resurrection Lutheran School, were placed on a code yellow lockdown as a precaution during the search.

Miller was taken into custody just after 3 p.m., police said. At a news conference, Cary Police Chief Terry Sult confirmed the arrest and said officers had located Miller after he fled, prompting the hours-long search. "He was in a dark place," Sult said, according to reports of the briefing.
Miller, who describes himself as a carpenter and former small-business owner, is challenging a Democratic incumbent and a Republican candidate in the November 3 election for the District 16 seat. Police did not announce charges in the reports reviewed on Monday evening, and the situation was described by police as resolved without physical confrontation.
