A nor'easter spinning off the East Coast became Subtropical Storm Josephine on Wednesday, and its impacts will continue along the coast through Friday, The Weather Channel reported. Coastal flood alerts are in effect for North Carolina's Outer Banks, where anywhere from 1 to 4 feet of inundation is possible, and high surf advisories cover the North Carolina coastline, with waves potentially reaching up to 14 feet.

The Capital Weather Gang reported the storm has already battered parts of the Outer Banks: a portion of NC-12 has been washed out and waves have threatened waterfront homes. It said some locations along the central Chesapeake Bay are forecast to reach moderate flood stage over the next several high tides through Friday, with about 1 foot of inundation expected at Annapolis.

FOX Weather reported the system, earlier tagged Invest 93L, was spinning about 350 miles offshore of Virginia Beach with top winds estimated at 50 mph, and that persistent north to northeast winds continue to push ocean water onto and over the coast from North Carolina to New Jersey, especially at high tide. It said the storm is forecast to remain offshore as it moves away from the coast through the end of the workweek.

The Weather Channel said high surf, coastal flooding and rip currents are expected to stretch as far south as Florida's Atlantic beaches and as far north as New England, with significant beach erosion expected across the East Coast this week, and that the worst gusts have shifted from the Carolinas to New England as Josephine shifts north. Residents in flood-prone coastal areas should follow local National Weather Service alerts and avoid flooded roads.
