ATWATER TOWNSHIP, Ohio — A woman who was shot at a residence in Atwater Township on Tuesday morning has died, and the man suspected of fleeing the scene is in custody after Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers stopped his vehicle on Interstate 77, according to the Portage County Sheriff's Office and an Ohio State Highway Patrol statement carried by WKYC.

Portage County sheriff's deputies responded in the mid-morning hours on Tuesday to a report of shots fired in Atwater Township. Deputies arriving at the residence found a woman who had been shot; she later succumbed to her injuries, the Sheriff's Office reported, in coverage by WNIR 100 FM. A male suspect fled the scene before deputies arrived. While the search was under way, both the Waterloo and Southeast school districts were placed on a soft lockdown, WNIR reported.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said it assisted the Portage County Sheriff's Office following the reported homicide investigation. 'Investigators from Portage County were able to gather details at the scene, relaying them to the Patrol's Intel Unit for assistance,' the Patrol said. 'Automatic license plate reader (ALPR) history was then able to be established for prior travel of the suspect's vehicle. With this information, ground troopers and the Patrol's Aviation unit were then able to locate the suspect's vehicle traveling south on Interstate 77 in Guernsey County.' At approximately 11:01 a.m., troopers from the Patrol's Cambridge Post conducted a traffic stop and the suspect was taken into custody without incident, the Patrol said.

Authorities have not yet publicly identified the suspect or the woman who died, and investigators have not announced a motive. The investigation is ongoing, and the Portage County Sheriff's Office has asked anyone with information to call 330-296-5100.

Why it matters for our readers: the arrest closed a fast-moving manhunt on I-77, one of the main north–south trucking corridors through Ohio that Punjabi long-haul drivers run between the Great Lakes and the Carolinas. The case also shows how quickly plate-reader networks now feed a suspect vehicle's travel history to patrol aircraft and ground troopers — a stop that began with a township shooting ended on the interstate within about an hour of the search widening.
