FRAMINGHAM, Massachusetts — State police agencies in six Northeastern states made 36 arrests for operating under the influence (OUI) and issued nearly 6,000 traffic citations during Operation Wicked Safe, a coordinated three-day enforcement push on major highways from October 13 to 15, the Massachusetts State Police announced on Tuesday, October 20.

The operation brought together state police from Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont, targeting dangerous and distracted driving on Interstates 90, 91, 84, 93, 95 and 395, Route 146 and other priority roads near state lines, according to the Massachusetts State Police. Across the six states, troopers recorded more than 2,000 speeding violations alongside the 36 OUI arrests.

In Massachusetts alone, field troopers assisted by the Air Wing conducted 3,714 motor vehicle stops, issuing more than 1,900 citations and making 16 OUI arrests. The Massachusetts citations included 1,110 speeding violations, 418 violations of the state's hands-free law, 253 move-over law violations and 130 seat-belt violations, the department said. The operation doubled enforcement activity in Massachusetts compared with the same period a year earlier. Police said October is historically the state's deadliest driving month — Massachusetts State Police recorded more than 4,000 crash-related calls in October 2025, and MassDOT recorded 38 fatal crashes that month.

The commercial-vehicle results are the part truck drivers should read twice. The Massachusetts Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section inspected 577 trucks and other commercial vehicles and found more than 1,300 serious violations — including drivers operating on suspended licences, falsified logbooks, drivers with no commercial driver's licence (CDL) at all, drivers lacking a required ignition-interlock device, controlled substances found in a truck, and brakes out of adjustment. The unit made three arrests and issued more than $72,000 in fines, according to the State Police release.

Why it matters for our readers: I-95, I-90 and I-84 are the arteries Punjabi truckers run through New York and New England, and this crackdown was aimed squarely at the violations that put a driver out of service on the spot — logbooks, CDL status and brakes. A falsified logbook or an out-of-adjustment brake is not a warning-level problem in a blitz like this; it is a parked truck, a fine and a record that follows the carrier. Troopers said enforcement would continue beyond the three-day operation, and urged all motorists to slow down, drive sober, wear seat belts and put the phone away.
