U.S. Steel's board of directors has approved full funding for a nearly $3 billion investment in a new hot strip mill at the company's Mon Valley Works – Edgar Thomson Plant near Pittsburgh, in Braddock, Pennsylvania, the company announced on Thursday, October 22, 2026.

The investment will replace aging equipment with modern steelmaking technology, increasing annual production capacity from approximately 2.2 million tons to approximately 3.5 million tons and expanding the range of steels U.S. Steel can produce for customers, the company said. Construction will begin after necessary permits are received, with initial production expected in late 2029.

“For generations, the Mon Valley has built America, and steel has built lives here,” said David Burritt, president and CEO of U.S. Steel. “We are bringing world-class technology to the Mon Valley, creating new capabilities for our customers, and strengthening American steelmaking for the next generation.” The new mill will roll steel slabs into thinner coils used in vehicles, appliances and construction materials, and its equipment — including walking beam furnaces and an in-line slab sizing press — is designed to cut fuel use, eliminate a cutting step and reduce scrap, according to the company.

The project will replace some operations at the nearby Irvin Plant, Manufacturing Dive reported on Friday, October 23. An economic impact study commissioned by U.S. Steel from Parker Strategy Group estimates the project could generate up to $58 million in state and local tax revenue over three years, Manufacturing Dive said — a company-commissioned estimate, not an independent forecast.

Pennsylvania's two US senators, Dave McCormick and John Fetterman, welcomed the approval in a joint statement. “This is exactly what Senator Fetterman and I fought for: real investment, good-paying jobs, and a strong future for American steelmaking in the Mon Valley,” McCormick said. The senators said the mill builds on the U.S. Steel–Nippon Steel partnership's broader commitment to invest $11 billion in U.S. Steel facilities, which they said is expected to help protect more than 11,000 jobs in Pennsylvania.
