A coffee food truck was ripped apart in a crash with a semi truck on Interstate 81 in Silver Spring Township, Pennsylvania, on Thursday morning, October 22, according to CDLLife, which cited WGAL 8, and a separate report by ATruckDrivers.com based on the New Kingstown Fire Company and PennDOT.

The New Kingstown Fire Company was dispatched at 9:26 a.m. to southbound I-81 near mile marker 55.4, close to Exit 57 for Mechanicsburg and Route 114, for a collision with entrapment. Crews found a Travelin' Tom's Coffee Truck and a tractor-trailer involved, with the coffee-truck driver trapped inside the wreckage, ATruckDrivers.com reported.

Rescue crews completed the extrication at 9:46 a.m., about 20 minutes after the call. “With the extensive damage, it was a miracle that the driver was able to survive,” the fire company said. The extent of the driver's injuries has not been released, and no further information on the semi driver was given in the reports.

Crash happened in a construction backup

PennDOT said the crash happened in the traffic backup from bridge road work that was wrapping up in the area, according to ATruckDrivers.com. CDLLife likewise reported that the semi collided with the coffee truck in a backup caused by construction on a nearby bridge along I-81.

All southbound lanes of I-81 were closed between Exit 57 and Exit 52 (Middlesex), with traffic detoured off the interstate at Exit 57 and drivers told to expect delays, the report said. Mutual aid at the scene included Landisburg, Union and Hampden units and multiple fire police units.

Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the crash. The cause of the collision has not been released. For Punjabi truckers who run I-81 — one of the main north-south freight corridors in the eastern United States — the crash is a reminder of how quickly a construction-zone backup can turn dangerous when traffic stops suddenly ahead.
