PHILADELPHIA — Halloween weekend in Philadelphia began with a night of violence spread across the city: four separate shootings and stabbings between late Friday night and Saturday morning left four men injured, two of them in critical condition, according to preliminary information from the Philadelphia Police Department. The incidents — in Cobbs Creek, on North 40th Street, on Lancaster Avenue and in North Philadelphia — have not been linked by police, no arrests have been reported in any of them, and investigators have released no names, no suspect descriptions and no motives.

Cobbs Creek: a 22-year-old shot in the face beside a bullet-riddled Escalade

The violence began late Friday night in West Philadelphia. Officers responded to the 500 block of South Salford Street in the Cobbs Creek section at about 11:35 p.m. for a report of a person with a gun, and found a 22-year-old man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the face, police said. Police transported him to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in critical condition. At the scene, investigators found a 2026 black Cadillac Escalade with multiple bullet holes and recovered two firearms.

NBC10 Philadelphia independently reported the same lead incident the same way: reporter Hayden Mitman wrote that the man was listed in critical condition after being found on a West Philadelphia roadway, near a bullet-riddled SUV, after being shot multiple times in the face, and that officers had been called to the 500 block of South Salford Street at about 11:35 p.m. on Friday. Police have not said whether the man was in the Escalade, beside it, or how the two recovered firearms relate to the shooting — or whether either firearm was the one that wounded him.

Three more calls before Saturday was half over

A few hours later, at around 3:15 a.m. on Saturday, officers were called to the 700 block of North 40th Street for a stabbing, police said. Medics transported an adult man to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition. Police released no name, no age and no account of what led to the stabbing.

At around 5:24 a.m., officers responded to Episcopal Hospital after a 20-year-old man arrived there with a gunshot graze wound to his left arm. The man told police the shooting had happened on the 4000 block of Lancaster Avenue. He was transferred to Temple University Hospital for treatment and was expected to be released. Officers searched the Lancaster Avenue area but did not locate a crime scene — meaning that, for this shooting, police so far have a victim's account and a hospital arrival, but no confirmed scene, no weapon and no suspect.

The fourth incident came at approximately 9:47 a.m. in North Philadelphia. Officers responding to the 2500 block of North 17th Street found a 43-year-old man suffering from a stab wound to the stomach. Police transported him to Temple University Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition — the second critical patient of the night and morning.

What is solid

  • Four separate incidents were reported between 11:35 p.m. Friday and 9:47 a.m. Saturday: two shootings and two stabbings, in Cobbs Creek, on North 40th Street, on Lancaster Avenue and on North 17th Street
  • A 22-year-old man was shot multiple times in the face on South Salford Street and was in critical condition at Penn Presbyterian; a 2026 black Cadillac Escalade at the scene had multiple bullet holes and two firearms were recovered
  • A 43-year-old man stabbed in the stomach on North 17th Street was in critical condition at Temple University Hospital; the other two victims were stable or expected to be released
  • No arrests have been reported, and police have released no names, suspect descriptions or motives for any of the four cases

What is only claimed

  • Whether any of the four incidents are connected: police have presented them as separate, and no link has been announced
  • What led to any of the attacks, and whether any victim was targeted: police say both points remain unclear
  • The Lancaster Avenue shooting has no located crime scene: it rests so far on the wounded man's own account to police

The neighbourhoods and the hospitals that took the night's wounded

The four scenes span the city's west and north: Cobbs Creek, the West Philadelphia neighbourhood that takes its name from the creek along the city's western edge; the Lancaster Avenue corridor, one of West Philadelphia's main commercial arteries; and North Philadelphia around North 17th Street. The wounded were spread across the city's trauma system in the same pattern — Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in West Philadelphia received both the Cobbs Creek shooting victim and the North 40th Street stabbing victim, while Temple University Hospital in North Philadelphia received the Lancaster Avenue victim and the critically wounded North 17th Street man. That two of the four men ended the night in critical condition in two different hospitals is the clearest measure of how serious, and how scattered, the night was.

Police are asking for tips in all four cases

Anyone with information about any of these incidents is asked to contact the Philadelphia Police Department by calling or texting 215-686-TIPS (8477). Police have not released suspect descriptions in any of the four cases, which makes witness accounts from South Salford Street, North 40th Street, Lancaster Avenue and North 17th Street the most likely source of the first break in each investigation.

What happens next

Each of the four cases now waits on the same missing pieces: a suspect description, a motive, and — for the Lancaster Avenue shooting — a crime scene. The two critical patients, the 22-year-old in Penn Presbyterian and the 43-year-old in Temple, remain the human centre of the story; any change in their conditions will lead the next police update. Until detectives release more, the official record of Philadelphia's Halloween-eve night is four scenes, four wounded men, two firearms recovered at one of them, and no one in custody for any of it.
