The vehicle, a 2019 Toyota Camry, crashed into an embankment at the Coro Building parking lot, and the driver attempted to escape on foot, according to that reporting. During the pursuit, the driver allegedly punched a Providence detective, though the officer did not require medical care. WPRI 12 News separately reported on Monday that Providence police apprehended suspects who they say fled a crash in the city that afternoon.

The driver was identified in the WJAR reporting as Nelson Pires. He faces charges reported as simple assault, obstruction, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and violating a no-contact order, and he also remains subject to an outstanding bench warrant issued in Lincoln, according to the reporting. The John DePetro Show's account of the same Providence incident said the driver punched the detective after the crash near I-95 and that responding officers and state troopers intervened to take him into custody, with temporary lane closures on I-95 while the scene was cleared.
