A man wanted in Virginia on an attempted-murder charge was still at large on Saturday, October 31, after fleeing a traffic stop in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on Friday evening and leading police on a pursuit that ended on Highway 22 near Highway 501, where he ran from the car on foot. An hours-long search by several law-enforcement agencies shut the four-lane highway in both directions late Friday, and police said on Saturday that he had not been found.

The Myrtle Beach Police Department said its officers located Dorian Evans in a vehicle just after 6:30 p.m. on Friday, October 30, in the area of North Kings Highway and 1st Avenue South in Myrtle Beach, and identified him as a man wanted for attempted murder out of Virginia. The attempted-murder charge is a Virginia warrant allegation: Evans has not been convicted of it, and he is presumed innocent unless a court finds otherwise.

The pursuit out of the city

When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, it fled, police said. Myrtle Beach officers pursued it northbound out of the city and requested assistance from the Horry County Police Department. Officers from both departments continued the pursuit until it ended on Highway 22 near Highway 501, on the inland side of the Grand Strand. There, police said, Evans ran from the car on foot. Myrtle Beach and Horry County officers searched for him for several hours on Friday night, but he was not located.

Highway 22 shut in both directions, CodeRED alert sent

The Horry County Police Department said around 9:30 p.m. on Friday that the four-lane Highway 22 was blocked in both directions from Highway 319 to Highway 501, and that the county department had stepped in at the request of the Myrtle Beach Police Department, which had opened the case. Conway police and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) also joined the effort. A CodeRED emergency message went out to homes within roughly four miles of the search zone, and police urged motorists to stay clear of the area and leave room for officers to work. Police alerts described the wanted man as armed and dangerous and told residents not to approach him.

If you see him, do not approach — call 911

Police say Dorian Evans, wanted in Virginia on an attempted-murder charge, was still at large on Saturday after fleeing on foot near Highway 22 and Highway 501. Anyone who sees him should not approach him and should call 911. The investigation remains active, and Horry County police said they would post updates as it moves forward.

What police have not said

The Myrtle Beach Police Department's statement did not say whether anyone else was in the vehicle with Evans, whether anyone was injured during the pursuit or the search, or whether charges beyond the Virginia warrant are expected in South Carolina. The highway was later reopened to traffic after the search operation, while the investigation itself remained active and ongoing, according to police updates reported locally.

Background: a main Grand Strand corridor, closed on a Friday night

Highway 22 — the Conway Bypass — is one of the main freeways of the Grand Strand, linking Highway 501 on the inland side with the Kings Highway corridor toward North Myrtle Beach, and it serves as a key route between the beaches and inland Horry County, including during hurricane evacuations. Its full closure in both directions on a Friday evening, in the middle of the Halloween weekend, hit traffic heading inland from the coast at one of the busiest times of the week, which is why county police pushed out the closure notice and the CodeRED alert so widely.

What happens next

As of Saturday, the search had become an active investigation rather than a roadside operation: Evans had not been found, the highway had reopened, and Horry County police said updates would be posted as the case moves forward. If he is arrested in South Carolina, he would be held on the Virginia attempted-murder warrant for Virginia authorities to pursue, and South Carolina officers have not yet announced whether the flight from the traffic stop will bring separate local charges. For residents around Highways 22, 319 and 501 — and for the wider Myrtle Beach community, including its immigrant and Punjabi families and the truckers and travellers who use the 501 corridor — the police advice stays the same until he is in custody: stay alert, do not approach him, and call 911 with any sighting.

What is solid

  • Myrtle Beach police say Dorian Evans, wanted in Virginia on an attempted-murder charge, fled a traffic stop just after 6:30 p.m. on Friday, October 30, near North Kings Highway and 1st Avenue South
  • The pursuit ended on Highway 22 near Highway 501, where Evans ran from the car; an hours-long search by Myrtle Beach, Horry County and Conway police and SLED did not find him on Friday night, and police said Saturday he was still at large
  • Horry County police closed Highway 22 in both directions between Highway 319 and Highway 501 during the search and sent a CodeRED alert to homes within about four miles

What is only claimed

  • The attempted-murder charge is a Virginia warrant allegation reported by police; Evans has not been convicted and is presumed innocent
  • Police have not said whether anyone else was in the vehicle, whether anyone was injured, or whether South Carolina charges will follow — those points remain unknown, not confirmed either way
