A Van Zandt County sheriff's deputy was killed and a Canton police officer was wounded on Tuesday night, October 20, during an exchange of gunfire at a home south of Canton, Texas, authorities said. The suspect was also found dead inside the residence.
According to the Van Zandt County Sheriff's Office, deputies were assisting the Canton Police Department in serving felony warrants at a home in the 4300 block of State Highway 198, just south of Canton, at about 10 p.m. The warrants, issued by Canton police, were for aggravated assault and aggravated assault of a peace officer.
At about 10:22 p.m., officers outside the home reported that shots were being fired at them from inside, the sheriff's office said. Officers returned fire. The deputy was pronounced dead at the scene. Canton police said their officer was flown to a hospital in Plano in stable condition and was due to have surgery on his right arm, where he was shot.
The suspect was found dead inside the home from a gunshot wound, the sheriff's office said. Authorities have not established whether the suspect died from officers' fire or a self-inflicted wound, and that question is part of the investigation. Officials had not publicly identified the deputy, the officer or the suspect as of Wednesday morning.
Sheriff Kevin Bridger said the shooting was an isolated incident and there is no continuing threat to the public. The Texas Rangers are investigating, according to the sheriff's office.
