Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux on Sunday morning put the confirmed toll from the three Halloween-night shootings in the Deep Ellum entertainment district at four people killed and 15 injured — and confirmed the first detentions in the case. The figures replace the early police account Awaaz Punjab reported earlier today, which put the wounded at at least five and said no arrests had been announced. Comeaux told a news conference that investigators were interviewing people in custody and witnesses, and that police still do not know whether the three shootings are connected or what started them.

The three scenes, in order
Dallas Police say the first shooting call came at about 12:19 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, in the 2600 block of Elm Street. A second shooting was reported just after 1 a.m. — WFAA, citing the department, puts the call at 1:04 a.m. — in the 2600 block of Main Street, one block south. A third was reported at about 1:35 a.m.; NBC 5 places it in the 200 block of Crowdus Street, about two blocks east, while WFAA's account puts the third call at Main and Pryor streets. Officers from across the city were sent into the district, and police shut down several blocks — the neighbourhood was closed around 1 a.m., CBS News Texas reported. The Dallas Morning News reported that the four people killed died across two of the locations, while at least six people were wounded at the third; the chief's confirmed district-wide injured total is 15.

What the chief said about arrests
"We are interviewing some individuals right now that we have arrested, still trying to figure out exactly how it ties into ... all the shootings out here," Comeaux said, as reported by NBC 5 and the Associated Press. Police spokesperson De'Rell Freeman said one person had been detained and taken to police headquarters for questioning, and that "multiple weapons" had been found and secured, the AP reported. The Texas Gazette, citing the chief via the Dallas Morning News, reports one suspect in custody in connection with the third shooting. Police have not publicly identified anyone in custody, have not announced formal charges, and have not released the names of the people killed or injured. Anyone detained is a suspect in an investigation, not a convicted person.

"No information that they are related" — for now
"At this time, we have no information that they are related, but we're still doing an investigation to try to figure that out at this time," Comeaux said. Sources told WFAA and FOX 4 the shootings do not appear to be related, though the investigation is ongoing. Department sources also told WFAA that at one scene a man said, "Hey, I'm gonna start shooting," and then opened fire — an account police have not publicly confirmed, and Awaaz Punjab reports it only as an unconfirmed claim attributed to those sources. Comeaux said the department had increased its police presence across Deep Ellum on Saturday night in anticipation of the Halloween crowds, and police are asking anyone who was in the district overnight and recorded video or photographs to share that material with investigators.
Our earlier story today, based on the first CBS News Texas and FOX 4 police account, reported four killed, at least five wounded and no arrests announced. The chief's Sunday-morning briefing raised the injured total to 15 and confirmed the first detention(s). The death toll — four — is unchanged. This story is the follow-up, and it supersedes the early casualty count.
A district that has been through this before
Deep Ellum, just east of downtown Dallas, is the city's historic live-music and nightlife district, built around Elm, Main and Commerce streets. It has seen recurring gunfire in recent years despite added security and surveillance by police and the Deep Ellum Foundation, the nonprofit that maintains the district, the Dallas Morning News reported. This weekend's shootings came about six months after another Deep Ellum shooting left a security officer dead and five other people injured, CBS News Texas reported, and NBC 5 counts the Halloween shootings as at least the fourth incident this year in which multiple people were injured by gunfire in the district. For Dallas's large South Asian community — including Punjabi families across the Dallas–Fort Worth suburbs — Deep Ellum is a familiar weekend destination, which is why the district-wide police appeal for phone video matters: investigators say crowd footage is often what identifies shooters in nightlife-district cases.
What is solid
- 4 killed and 15 injured in three separate shootings in Deep Ellum early Sunday, Nov. 1 — Chief Daniel Comeaux, Sunday-morning news conference
- Calls at about 12:19 a.m. (2600 block Elm St), about 1:04 a.m. (2600 block Main St) and about 1:35 a.m. (third scene in Deep Ellum)
- The 4 killed died across two locations; at least 6 were wounded at the third (Dallas Morning News breakdown within the chief's 15-injured total)
- At least one person detained/arrested and being interviewed; 'multiple weapons' found and secured (spokesperson De'Rell Freeman via AP)
- No names of victims or of anyone in custody released; no formal charges announced; police had boosted Halloween-night presence in the district and are appealing for public video
What is only claimed
- Whether the three shootings are connected — chief: 'no information that they are related' so far; WFAA/FOX 4 sources say they do not appear related; investigation ongoing
- Exact location of the third scene — NBC 5: 200 block of Crowdus Street; WFAA via Texas Gazette: Main and Pryor streets
- How many people are in custody — chief spoke of 'some individuals... we have arrested'; AP/Freeman describe one person detained for questioning; Texas Gazette reports one suspect in custody over the third shooting
- The 'I'm gonna start shooting' account — department sources to WFAA, not publicly confirmed by police
- An early NBC 5 report also logged a separate shooting call at about 3:30 a.m. on South Ervay Street, outside Deep Ellum; the chief's confirmed three scenes are all inside the district
What happens next
The next steps are the formal identification of the four people killed, a police decision on charges against anyone in custody, and the department's findings on whether the three scenes are linked. The news conference was held at 100 South Crowdus Street, and police are asking anyone with information — or with video from the Elm, Main and Crowdus street blocks between about midnight and 2 a.m. — to contact investigators. Awaaz Punjab will follow the charging and identification updates as they are released.
