DAYTON, Texas — A 14-year-old who was struck by a Dayton Independent School District school bus in a hit-and-run crash on October 16 has died, his father confirmed to ABC13 Houston on Saturday, October 24. The father said the teen died on Thursday, October 22, after earlier telling ABC13 his son was "fighting for his life" and had been flown to hospital.

Dayton police said officers responded to the intersection of US-90 and Stilson Road after a crash was reported at about 6:30 a.m. on Friday, October 16, ABC13 reported. Police said the teen was a pedestrian in the area, not a student passenger, and that students were aboard the bus when he was allegedly struck.

Police identified the bus driver as Ricky Eugene Cherry, 70, and said he allegedly left the scene without stopping to help, according to ABC13. Cherry was arrested hours after the crash, the department said. KPRC Click2Houston also reported the arrest by Dayton police in connection with the hit-and-run that had left the 14-year-old critically injured.

Online records cited by ABC13 showed Cherry was charged with collision causing serious bodily injury. ABC13 reported on Saturday that it was not yet clear whether prosecutors will upgrade the charges following the teen's death. The charge is an allegation and has not been decided by a court.

ABC13 said it had asked Dayton ISD how long Cherry had been with the district, whether he was still employed there and whether he had had prior crashes, and the district had not responded to those questions in its earlier reporting. The investigation is ongoing, police said.
