One of the largest technology gatherings in the world opened in downtown Houston on Monday, November 2, as AfroTech Conference 2026 began its five-day run at the George R. Brown Convention Center — the 10th anniversary edition of a conference that began a decade ago in the San Francisco Bay Area with just 650 attendees and now expects more than 40,000 people through its doors. The conference, organised by Blavity Inc., runs from Monday, November 2 to Friday, November 6, under the theme “Build What's Next,” with more than 300 speakers across 15 tracks and 11 stages, according to the organisers and Houston First, the city's official destination organisation.
The scale of the growth tells the story of the event itself. AfroTech started in the Bay Area in 2016 with 650 people; by 2024 it drew more than 37,500, and the 2025 conference in Houston passed 40,000, making it the largest gathering of Black tech professionals in the world. The 2026 agenda, as set out in AfroTech's own first-timer's guide, covers 15 tracks and 129 sessions spanning artificial intelligence, engineering, entrepreneurship, the future of work and wealth-building, alongside hands-on workshops, live product demonstrations on the Product & Innovation Stage and a full day of AI training for AI Edge ticket holders.

AI training, health tech and hiring — what happens inside
This year's programming, as announced by Blavity through PR Newswire, spans AI upskilling, health innovation, government technology, entrepreneurship, executive leadership, smart cities and the creator economy. Two summits anchor the week: the AI Edge Training Summit on Tuesday, November 3 — election day itself — a beginner-friendly programme focused on practical AI skills, tools and workflows, and the Human Centered AI Summit the same day. HealthStack, the healthcare summit inside AfroTech, is built for physicians, nurses and the builders creating health technology. AfroTech says it is advancing a commitment to train one million people in AI, building on a year-round community of more than 75,000 professionals and 150 global companies.

The speaker list underlines why the conference draws national attention. Confirmed speakers include Vanessa E. Wyche, director of NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston; Dr. Timnit Gebru, the AI researcher; Dr. Jessica Shepherd; Louis Carr, president of BET; and entrepreneur and bestselling author Andrew Yang, according to Houston First. And for many attendees the conference floor is a jobs fair as much as a talk series: Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Apple, NVIDIA, Anthropic, OpenAI, JPMorgan Chase and Netflix are among the companies on the floor, AfroTech's guide notes, and its Talent Infusion platform matches attendee résumés to open roles — hiring direct enough, the guide says, that recruiters have offered interviews to attendees on the spot.
Why Houston fights to host it
For Houston, AfroTech is a headline date in the George R. Brown Convention Center's fall calendar, filling downtown hotels and restaurants for five days in the middle of election week. Houston First points to the size of the prize the city is competing for: Houston is home to nearly 155,000 tech workers and more than 7,600 tech-related firms, according to Greater Houston Partnership data from the research group CompTIA, and Houston-area companies have raised more than $12.7 billion in venture capital across nearly 2,300 deals over the last five years, with $2.1 billion invested in 2025 alone. A conference that brings 40,000 tech professionals, founders and investors to the city for a week is both a hospitality windfall and an audition — a chance to persuade some of them to build, hire or relocate there.
AfroTech 2026 runs Monday, November 2 to Friday, November 6 at the George R. Brown Convention Center, 1001 Avenida De Las Americas, Houston, TX 77010 — a walkable downtown campus of five venues with 10+ stages, connected by skybridge to nearby hotels. ASL interpretation and live captioning are provided on the Main Stage. Full agenda and tickets: afrotechconference.com.
The Houston relevance runs wider than one week of hotel bookings. Houston is one of the largest Punjabi and South Asian population centres in the United States, and its economy — energy, medicine, logistics and a fast-growing tech sector — employs thousands of diaspora engineers, health professionals, students and founders. A conference whose central themes are AI skills, health innovation and entrepreneurship speaks directly to the questions those communities are asking: which skills the AI economy will reward, how to get hired by the firms building it, and how to fund a company inside it. Sessions such as Tuesday's full-day AI training are pitched at exactly that practical level.

What happens next: the conference continues through Friday, November 6, with the AI Edge and Human Centered AI summits on Tuesday, summit and track sessions through the week, and the exhibition and hiring floor open across all five days. Organisers publish the full schedule at afrotechconference.com, and Houston First lists the event among the GRB's headline fall conventions. Awaaz Punjab's USA desk will note any major announcements — hiring commitments, Houston expansions or AI-training partnerships — that come out of the week.
