Police said they received a call about an assault in progress at about 12:35 a.m. and found the 23-year-old dead with gunshot wounds upstairs inside the home. While officers were investigating, they learned of a second victim, a 19-year-old who had also been shot at the party and was taken to hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Neither man was named in the reports.

Investigators estimated at least 50 people were inside the rented home for a large house party. Police said they did not yet know exactly what started the shooting, but believed it was connected to something that happened at the party, and that one group began shooting and another group fired back. Several shots were fired, the shooting moved from inside the home to outside, and neighbours reported hearing the party through the night.
