A man was killed on Wednesday afternoon in an exchange of gunfire with a Houston police officer in the Gulfton area of southwest Houston, police said. The officer was grazed during the gunfire but was not taken to a hospital.

According to Houston police, officers received a call at 3:52 p.m. about a man walking westbound in the 5800 block of Glenmont Drive with a black handgun that had been placed inside a pink purse. Police said an officer arrived within minutes and saw the man still carrying the purse.

Assistant Chief Luis Menendez-Sierra said at the scene that the officer got out of the patrol vehicle and repeatedly ordered the man to put the purse down. Police say the man instead reached into the purse, pulled out the handgun and pointed it at the officer. The officer fired, police said, and the man returned fire, with the two exchanging multiple rounds as the officer moved behind the patrol unit for cover.

FOX 26 Houston reported that the officer rendered first aid to the man after the shooting, but the man died at the scene. Investigators have not publicly identified him. The shooting happened in a dense residential area near a high school and a K-8 charter school as children were leaving campus, according to local reporting.

The case will go through the city's standard review process for officer-involved shootings, police said. The account above is the police account of the encounter; no independent findings have been released.
