The crash happened at about 4:48 a.m. on the Interstate 610 Loop near Tierwester Street, east of the Highway 288 interchange, according to police and the city's incident log. A driver travelling in the wrong direction struck a Chevrolet Suburban head-on.
The wrong-way driver, who was alone in his vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police had not released his identity and described him as a man believed to be in his 40s.
The driver of the Suburban was taken to Ben Taub Hospital in critical condition. Investigators said there were no immediate signs of impairment, and it was not yet clear how the wrong-way driver entered the freeway.
While officers were blocking the road after the crash, a separate collision followed: another truck struck two police vehicles as officers stood outside them. No one was injured in that second crash. Police said that driver showed no signs of impairment and told officers he had not been paying attention.
The Houston Police Department is investigating both crashes, KPRC 2 also reported.
