According to the warrant, Manning and his stepson first went on Thursday to the Devon on Northgate apartment complex to confront two teenagers — friends of the stepson — about a firearm reportedly taken from the stepson's home. The pair later encountered the teens again near Esters Road.

The warrant says the teens allegedly began shooting at Manning and his stepson while they were in a vehicle, and Manning returned fire but was shot in the head. His stepson drove him to a nearby Family Dollar store to seek help. Manning was placed on life support and died on Saturday.

Irving police arrested 17-year-old Zayne Ryder Townsend and a juvenile, who has not been publicly named because of their age. Manning's stepson identified both as suspects, according to the warrant. Townsend was initially charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon while Manning was still alive, and as of Monday it was unclear when or whether that charge would be upgraded following Manning's death. The juvenile's charges were not specified in the information available, and Townsend declined to speak to detectives, the warrant states.

Manning's uncle, Charles Ahmad Mosley, said his nephew should not have confronted the teenagers and that their parents should have been contacted instead, while also condemning the shooting and the presence of guns in the conflict. The charges remain allegations and have not been proven in court.
