The 31-year-old man's identity was not given during the news conference, but Salame said he has an active drug warrant, KSAT reported. Undercover SAPD officers followed the man to a hotel and a gas station to verify he was the suspect they were looking for.

Salame said the man at some point realized he was being followed and waved his gun out of the vehicle's window while driving, KSAT reported. Officers told the chief the man fired his weapon at them during the vehicle pursuit, and SAPD returned fire. "There were a couple other vehicles caught in the crossfire," Salame said. "There were no bystanders, thankfully, that were injured."
