Three adults were seriously hurt when a recreational vehicle towing a Jeep collided with an 18-wheeler and caught fire on U.S. Highway 82 in Whitesboro, Texas, near the entrance to the Lucky Stop truck stop, local stations KXII and KTEN reported.

Whitesboro Fire Chief Jeff Patterson told reporters that four people were in the RV — three adults and a child. One adult was sent to a Dallas hospital, described in one report as the Parkland burn centre, and the other two adults were taken to Texoma Medical Center in Denison. Officials had not released the names of those hurt as of Wednesday evening.

The crash prompted a second-alarm fire response and activation of a mass-casualty plan, bringing in additional fire trucks and ambulances, Chief Patterson said. Firefighters from Whitesboro, Sherman and Pilot Point were among those who worked at the scene, according to KTEN.

All eastbound lanes of U.S. 82 were closed for several hours while crews put out the fire, treated the injured and cleared the road, and westbound traffic was reduced to one lane during the response. CDL Life, citing KXII, put the closure at more than four hours.

Surveillance video from a nearby business captured the collision, the reports said. Officials have not said what caused the crash, and the investigation is continuing. No cause or fault finding has been announced.

U.S. 82 east of Whitesboro is a busy truck corridor, and the business that shared the surveillance video said it was doing so to warn drivers that the stretch near trucks entering the truck stop is dangerous — that is the business's stated view, not an official finding.
