What officers found at the house

When officers arrived, they found three adult male victims who had sustained gunshot wounds, police said. Members of the Hampton Division of Fire and Rescue responded to the scene, provided medical assistance to the wounded men, and transported all three to a local hospital for further treatment.

Police said the three men's injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening. The department did not name the victims, give their ages, or say which hospital they were taken to, and it released no description of any suspect.

Major Crimes detectives take over the case

Detectives from the Major Crimes Unit responded to Ireland Street and are now handling the investigation, which police logged as a maiming investigation. Detectives are still working to establish the motive and the circumstances surrounding the shooting, the statement said.

In the one public-safety assessment police have given so far, detectives said they do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the community. No arrest was announced in the statement, and police did not say whether anyone had been detained or questioned.

Police appeal for witnesses

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Hampton Police Division at 757-727-6111 or the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP. Anonymous tips can also be sent through the secure tip form at P3Tips.com. Police say Crime Line callers remain anonymous and never appear in court.

A Halloween-night shooting, on a night of house parties

The shooting came on Halloween night, when house parties and trick-or-treating fill residential streets across Hampton Roads, and it turned one neighbourhood gathering on Ireland Street into a crime scene. Hampton, an independent city on the Virginia Peninsula at the mouth of Chesapeake Bay, is policed by the Hampton Police Division, whose Major Crimes Unit handles the city's most serious violent-crime investigations.

What happens next

For now, the case rests with Major Crimes detectives: they will interview the three wounded men and party guests, look for camera footage from the street, and wait for anyone who was at the house to come forward. Any arrest, charge or victim update would come in a further police statement. Until then, the department's message to the Ireland Street neighbourhood is the one in its statement — detectives do not believe there is an ongoing threat, but they want to hear from everyone who saw what happened.
