Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards said investigators believe the shooting stemmed from an altercation near Henderson Hall that escalated into gunfire, according to the reporting. Numerous people were in the vicinity when shots were fired and fled the area. Officers were already stationed on campus for the homecoming celebrations and reached the scene quickly, police said.

The university directed students to stay indoors while police investigated the gunfire near the campus, and the investigation remained active on Sunday, according to Wisevoter's account of the university's alerts and the Richmond Police Department response.
