The Trump administration has revoked more than 300,000 US visas during the president's second term, the State Department said on Tuesday, as the federal government continues its sweeping immigration crackdown, Reuters reported.

The figure marks a sharp acceleration. In an update on August 10, the department had put the number of revocations since January 2025 at more than 175,000, Reuters said.

Announcing the new total on X, State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said the administration had revoked more visas at a faster pace than any administration in history, and said it had “zero tolerance for foreigners here on visas who break the law, commit fraud, or undermine our national security.”

A State Department official told Al Jazeera that most of the revocations were linked to criminal activity, public safety concerns, immigration violations, fraud or misrepresentation, or other information suggesting the holders were no longer eligible. More than 4,000 visas were revoked from foreign nationals who engaged in or facilitated birth tourism, the official said.

According to the official, assault and related offences accounted for about 25 per cent of the revocations and driving under the influence for about 22 per cent, while theft and substance abuse or distribution each accounted for about 7 per cent.

The administration has also tightened scrutiny of visa applicants' social media activity and expanded screening. Rights advocates cited by Reuters say the crackdown has violated due process and free speech rights and has created an unsafe environment, particularly for ethnic minorities who have raised concerns about racial profiling. The administration says its measures aim to improve domestic security.

The revocations cover people already holding US visas — students, workers, visitors and family travellers among them. Officials say cases are driven by criminal records, fraud findings or eligibility concerns, so any arrest, DUI or status violation can now carry visa consequences as well.
