A man is in critical condition after he was stabbed in the torso in Seattle's Chinatown-International District in the early hours of Saturday, October 31, 2026. The Seattle Police Department said officers responded at about 4:45 a.m. to reports of a stabbing in the 1000 block of South Jackson Street, found the man with a stab wound to the torso, and gave aid until Seattle Fire Department medics took him to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition. The department's blotter entry, written by Detective Brian Pritchard and posted at 6:11 a.m. the same morning, is logged as Incident 2026-324400, West Precinct.

An argument over a scooter or a bike, police say
According to the police investigation so far, the victim and the suspect had been involved in an altercation over a Lime scooter or a bicycle — witnesses were unsure which of the two it was. The victim walked away from the confrontation, but the suspect approached him again and stabbed him, police said. The suspect then left northbound on 12th Avenue on the scooter or bike. Officers searched the area but did not locate him.

Suspect description released
Police described the suspect as a Black male wearing a gray ski mask and a gray jacket. No name, age or photograph has been released, and no arrest had been announced in the department's reporting. The Seattle Times, in its own account of the attack summarised by the Seattle Courant, likewise reported a man critically wounded after a dispute over a bike or scooter in the district.

Who is investigating
Detectives with the Seattle Police Department's Homicide and Assault Unit are leading the investigation and are working to determine what led up to the assault. The choice of that unit reflects the severity of the wound: the victim was listed in critical condition at Harborview, the region's Level I trauma centre, which receives the most serious injury cases from across Washington and neighbouring states.
Anyone with information about the stabbing is asked to call the Seattle Police Department's Violent Crimes Tip Line at (206) 233-5000 and reference Incident 2026-324400.
Background: 12th and Jackson, an intersection with a history
The 1000 block of South Jackson Street sits a short distance from the corner of 12th Avenue South and South Jackson Street, one of the most closely watched intersections in Seattle. In November 2024, a series of stabbings in the Chinatown-International District over two days, November 7 and 8, wounded ten people; a suspect, Roland Lee, 37, was arrested and ordered held on $2 million bail after a first court appearance, with prosecutors reporting probable cause for five counts of first-degree assault, according to KIRO 7's reporting of the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office. Community organisations in the district, including Friends of Little Saigon, have for years pressed the city for more law-enforcement presence and social services around 12th and Jackson, where residents and businesses have long complained about open drug use and street crime.

Why it matters for the district — and for Punjabi readers in Washington
The Chinatown-International District is one of Seattle's most immigrant-dense neighbourhoods, home to Chinese, Vietnamese and Filipino communities, small restaurants and grocery businesses that open early and close late — exactly the hours when this attack happened. Washington's Punjabi community, concentrated in the Seattle–Tacoma corridor and in trucking and small business, uses the same downtown streets and the same trauma system at Harborview. A pre-dawn stabbing over a shared scooter is a small incident in isolation; at an intersection with this record, residents read it as one more test of whether the city's safety promises are reaching the street.
What happens next
Detectives will be looking for surveillance video from businesses along South Jackson Street and 12th Avenue, and for the Lime scooter or bicycle itself, whose trip data could help identify who was riding it. The victim's condition at Harborview is the next fact to watch, along with any suspect arrest. Awaaz Punjab will update this story if Seattle police announce an arrest, release images, or confirm a change in the victim's condition.
